Boys 8th Grade
The Belmont Ridge Boys 8 Travel Team rolled on in the playoffs last Wednesday by defeating the Harper Park Hurricanes in overtime by a score of 59-49. Michael Hamrick was the leading scorer in this contest. On Sunday, the outcome was not as positive. The River Hawks lost a heartbreaker to the Smart's Mill Stallions with 3.7 seconds left on the clock, by a score of 56-54. Smart's Mill had their way early in the game, taking a commanding lead by 17 points. The River Hawks whittled down their lead to 11 at the break and came storming back in the second half, taking a 6 point lead in the fourth quarter. As the game was winding down, each team traded baskets and Smart's Mill took advantage of a forced steal by pushing the ball inside and coming away with a basket and one free throw due to a foul. With 7.3 seconds left in regulation, the Stallions pushed the ball down the middle of the floor and made an amazing shot under the basket to secure the win. Regardless of the outcome, this was the best game that the River Hawks played all year. The team showed heart and character, even in the loss. Congratulations to the Stallions and best of luck in the remainder of the playoffs.
